Day Long Ago, So What Chance Does She Have Of Saving Him From Himself Viscount of Vice by Shana Galen Covenant Gardens Book O I recently read the first book in this new Covenant Gardens series by Shana Galen, so reading this novella was really amazing because it provides some background on Sir Brook s adventures I love every word Shana Galen puts on a page and this book was no exception Sometimes novella s are like an appetizer They are exciting and delicious, but you still want your main course This novella was like a full course meal When I finished the book I didn t feel like anything was missing The plot was well developed, there was adventure and mystery and a very well explored romance.Emma has longed for the Viscount of Vice, Flynn since she first met him as a sixteen year old girl He was out of her league then, but since turning eighteen and having her first season, she has high hopes that their paths will cross I really liked the character Emma She isn t flighty or flirty, she has substance to her character and is a woman who knows what her heart wants.Flynn was a great character as well He has reveled in being the Viscount of Vice for years, yet the act is wearing on him He definitely noticed Emma when they first met, but even with the warning of her brother the Duke, he still wanted her Fast forward two years and he is trying his hardest not to be the unscrupulous man society has him pegged for He sees that Emma is a lovely young woman and he doesn t want to trifle with her in a way that would leave her ruined Not only is she a siren to him, she possesses great compassion and concern for others. The mystery element of the book sweeps both Emma and Flynn into a dramatic rescue gone wrong in the town of Bath It was exciting to have the setting away from London and to have something nefarious happen in the sleepy town known for restorative practises Flynn has been brought to Bath to find and reunite with his long lost younger brother, found by Sir Brooks His brother Matthew has been part of a gang of thieves and Matthew is an opium addict Reuniting with Matthew is much harder than Flynn anticipated and that is where the adventure and mystery take over It s an exciting ride that has Emma and Flynn alternating between running for their lives to exploring what is between them This novella is a fabulous read It can be read before starting the new Covenant Gardens series or as a stand alone Once again, Shana Galen proves that she is an outstanding author Even with a novella, she has the reader entranced in the story and feeling very satisfied with the ending.Reviewed for www.kiltsandswords.com Thank you to SOURCEBOOKS CASABLANCA and Netgalley for providing a review copy in exchange for an honest review.I m just going to say it this cover needs to go Whoo It feels so good to get that off my covered chest Now let s talk pages Viscount of Vice kicks off Shana Galen s newest series, Covent Garden Cubs Bow Street Runner Brook Derring is the common thread within the first two books This story and the next one begins with a startling discovery, and things take off from there.Viscount of Vice focuses on Henry and Emma, a dashing rogue and a na ve young miss who have been secretly yearning for each other since their first meeting Except Emma isn t as quite as na ve as Henry thought, and her boldness takes him by surprise Henry and Emma were both likable characters He is quite the rake, jumping from bed to bed and doing his best to avoid squabbles when he can But underneath Henry s blas manner is pain that s been plaguing him longer than he s been carrying his torch for Emma She was a determined, bright heroine who saw beneath Henry s persona and wanted to help him move on to a meaningful life. The plot of this book was intriguing, and the reader was flung right into the story from the get go when Henry, quite literally, was hanging on for dear life As it s a novella, things moved swiftly there was never a moment when things seemed to slow down There was a lot of growth in this book for Henry s character, and it was nice to see It was fitting for him, as it was clear the man he became was there all along he just needed to find it.My only criticism of this book was the timing of the most intimate scene between the characters Without giving too much away, I think there were much pressing matters than cozying up when they did As level headed as Emma was, I just didn t feel that this was in line with her character Having said that, Emma and Henry had chemistry in spades You could feel the longing between them. While I think this would have made a fantastic full length novel Henry and Emma both have interesting pasts and hobbies , I was satisfied with this novella If you like some intrigue mixed in with your romance, this book is right up your alley It definitely left me with a desire to continue the series This review was originally posted at Badass Book Reviews. Review posted on Got Fiction book blogIt s nice to start the New Year off with a good book When Flynn was a boy, he and his little brother were playing hide and seek He looks up to find him, and his brother is missing.Fast forward to adulthood, and Flynn has spent his entire life blaming himself for the loss of his brother His family was devastated from this, and he s believed his brother was dead all these years So he builds up the reputation of being the Viscount of Vice And he revels in it.But Emma knows better She knows he s a good man, and although she doesn t know the specifics, she knows that he s not to blame Now that she s 18, Emma is ready to go after Flynn.Normally an 18 year old heroine bugs me They are barely adults at 18, she s in her first Season, I mean I was pretty naive at 18 And I know it s accurate, but still, 18 is still a teenager That being said, Emma never seems young to me I liked that But I don t know why she couldn t be a couple years older Flynn for his part, knows how young she is, and tries to keep a healthy distance he s about 9 years older But he s been in love with her since he first saw her when she was maybe 12 years old.I m honestly surprised no one mentions that in any of the reviews I ve read It was presented so that you don t feel Flynn is a perv drooling over his buddy s sister, but it s not exactly glossed over either Either way, it didn t bother me, because she s 18 when we start the story, and Flynn has kept his distance from Emma for all these years, so you don t feel as if he s dreaming and pining away over of his friend s little sister In fact he makes a conscious effort to become a better man, which I loved. The set up is for the series, not just this novella, so when Emma is kidnapped by a street gang in Bath, it s hinting at things to come The rescue is easy, but it shows you just how bad the villain of the next book and possibly the series really is Flynn was a great hero Between the missing brother, the kidnapped heroine, and looking at the next book, I see a pattern here, that looks very promising I can t wait to read the next book I can t believe this is my first Shana Galen book I swear I ve read her before, but I guess not I do have almost her entire backlist on my nook, though, so I m set This is a spin off series of her Jewels of the Ton series, the third book of which has Emma s brother, so there s the connection, and I m excited, since as I said, I already have the whole series Anyone who wants a quick read, or a Shana Galen fix will really enjoy this, and I think it s a really good introduction to the series called The Covent Garden Cubs. ARC courtesy of Sourcebooks via netgalley The Viscount of Vice isthe the first novel in Shana Galen s new Covent Garden cubs series The novella is a fast paced regency romp filled with adventure and passion He was going to hell Shame, Flynn thought , dangling from a third floor window of a town house in exclusive Grosvernor Square.Moisture gathered on his fingers, and his hand slipped He could not hold on much longer Perhaps his death was for the best.Still, it seemed harsh even for one such as Beelzebub to claim him when he was hanging naked from a window of one of the most prestigious addresses in Mayfair.Flynn A woman s voice hissed His name was Henry Flynn, and he was the new Lord Chesham, but everyone called him Flynn when he wasn t called something far less complimentary.Who could resist a story which opens with the hero dangling naked off a balcony Can you imagine I absolutely loved the first chapter of this novella as it was well written and laugh out loud funny I couldn t help falling for the novella s hero the charming scoundrel Flynn.Ms Galen s hero, heroine and their adventures are well written and the storyline conflict is credible Flynn meets with Sir Brooks Derring Derring has some important information for Flynn and the two men head towards the town of Bath Flynn meets and dances with Lady Emma Talbot, at an assembly in Bath The character of Emma resonated with me She s not the average society miss looking to marry a wealthy nobleman She s independent and enjoys volunteering at the hospital Emma has been love with Flynn for years Flynn might be in lust with Emma but he s afraid of Emma s brother, the powerful Duke of Ravenscroft the hero from the author s book Sapphires Are An Earl s Best friend. The Viscount of Vice provides a great transition to Ms Galen s new Covent Garden Cubs series The novella explores several social issues and introduces the new series villain I read the novella in one sitting It held my interest and I am looking forward to the first book in the series Earl s Just Want to Have Fun. Received an ARC of Viscount of Vice This book was a different direction for me I haven t read a book by this author before Shana Galen was a pleasant surprise She combined just the right amount of romance with a little bit of mystery This book took me on an exciting journey I could not put it down Henry and Emma s story knocked me off my feet Enjoyable read I have found a new author to enjoy. 2.5 Cliches left, right and center stars A hero secretly in love with his best friends sister goes and earns himself the sobriquet The Viscount of Vice A sex scene when our protagonists are held prisoner by the bad guy..you get the picture If you are an HR veteran, you can have fun guessing what was going to happen as the plot unfolds Reviewer rating 4.5 StarsI received an ARC from Net Galley for an honest review Since I have been a fan of Shana Galen s for several years, I looked forward to reading Viscount of Vice with great anticipation Again, as always, Ms Galen did not disappoint me I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful tale of attraction, amidst mayhem and chaos This great story has a bit of everything as this author s books tend to have, laughter, high adventure and plenty of passion. As a reader, I greatly appreciate the fact that I can always count on Shana Galen to deliver a book consistent with her usual style Now I do not mean her stories are predictable in the least, just that I know what type of book it will be, in the sense that it will involve intrigue and danger with a fulfilling ending.Flynn, as all his friends call him, even though he has recently become Viscount Chesham, is a swashbuckling kind of hero with a bit of the bad boy thrown in He is fun loving, yet at times a bit vulnerable This is the kind of hero, Ms Galen writes so well From the first kiss to the culmination of their love, I could feel the passion between the hero and the heroine Flynn yearns for Lady Emma, but knows he does not deserve her, having lived a life of debauchery and recklessness From the first moment he meets her, when she is still a young lady, barely sixteen, he is drawn to her as a moth to a flame, but he stays away After all, he is nine years older and has no business being attracted to her When he meets her two years later, he is immediately captivated by her beauty and strong will, which is apparent from their first encounter.Emma has loved Flynn from the first moment she saw him at her brother s wedding, judging all men by him and finding them lacking, during her first season When Flynn flirts with her, but then withdraws, she follows him and accepts his challenge of a kiss She is lost from that first brush of his lips Even though she initiated the kiss, he sweeps her up in his arms and takes over, causing her desire to soar Their embrace is interrupted and thus starts the high adventure of the story Will the budding flames of attraction grow as they meet the danger that awaits them, or will it flicker out when reality comes crashing down As is the norm with Ms Galen s books, I was drawn into the story from the first page and remained that way until the last page I know this is a short story, but I would have liked to see a bit plot development Nonetheless, a delightful read with a satisfying HEA at the end To make it believable, she includes a glimpse of their life a couple months after their marriage I do wonder if she will do a spin off for Flynn s brother I think his story would make another excellent book, so much potential is there.I am so glad I had the opportunity to read this intriguing little gem of a story and look forward to the next adventure Ms Galen takes me on If you enjoy stories that are light hearted with lots of excitement set in the Regency period, then this is one you will not want to miss Happy reading Shana always gives us a good tale.Henry Flynn carries guilt like other men carry confidence With no wish to believe himself deserving of anyone or anything grand, he does his best to drown his sorrows in drink and live up to the name of Viscount of Vice The darling Emma Talbot believes him to be one of the best men, if he d ever take a moment to notice her When Henry is finally reunited with his long lost brother, Matthew, his guilt over his brother s state threatens to pull him even deeper into a state of deserving nothing good in his life Emma is determined to help him see the error of that thinking, and save him from himself. We first met Flynn in the Jewels of the Ton series and Emma is the sister of the Duke of Ravenscroft from SAPPHIRES ARE AN EARL S BEST FRIEND Emma has been in love with Flynn for years but always felt like she went completely unnoticed by the handsome man When she comes of age, she gains Henry s notice but now she feels it s too late because he is steeped in his own wallowing guilt What she doesn t realize is that Henry has always noticed her, and lusts for her.I liked Emma a lot She s not the average young lady of the ton looking simply to marry a wealthy man of title She s got an independent nature and enjoys her volunteer work at the hospital We are introduced to an element of mystery, which I suspect will carry through into the series, when Emma and Flynn are pulled away to Bath and become embroiled in a dramatic rescue surrounding his brother It was rather delightful to have the setting take us out of London to the sleepy town where a dark side is revealed I don t wish to tell you for it would be too easy to reveal the whole story.I highly recommend reading VISCOUNT OF VICE by Shana Galen as it is driven by action from the first pages to the last some funny things happen too If you ve read the Jewels of the Ton, you most certainly will thrill to Flynn and Emma s story and be left wanting in the Covent Garden Cubs series which leads off with the full length, EARLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN, already available and on my reading list.If you haven t experienced the exciting stories of lords and ladies, spies, and bow runners conjured by Shana Galen, then get your first taste with VISCOUNT OF VICE you ll be hooked forever purchased for my own personal reading but sharing an honest and unscripted review.
